When a Steam game will not launch, classify the failure, preserve saves and verify the installation before reinstalling everything. One failing game usually calls for different investigation than every game failing after a system change.

This is documentation-based troubleshooting, not a claim that we reproduced your game's error.

Record the symptom before changing anything#

Does the game never show a window, display an error or close after a splash screen? Does Steam briefly show it as running? Did the failure begin after an update, mod installation or driver change?

Record the game, operating system, error wording and last known working state. Test another installed game if practical. This helps separate a game-specific problem from a broader system issue.

Do not mix launch failures with a game that runs but feels slow. For that problem, see high ping versus low FPS.

Protect local saves and custom content#

Locate the game's documented save and configuration paths. Check its cloud-save behavior rather than assuming the Steam client protects everything.

Keep a copy of important local saves and note installed mods before taking actions that replace files. If you do not know where saves live, consult the game developer's support page first.

Do not delete an entire game or user-data folder simply because a generic troubleshooting guide suggests a reset.

Restart and verify the installation#

Valve's file verification guide gives the current route: open the game's Properties, choose Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files.

Run verification for one game at a time and avoid other intensive maintenance operations while it runs. Valve notes that some local configuration files can fail verification normally; interpret the result according to its guidance rather than assuming any reported difference is the root cause.

Verification checks installation files. It does not establish that your hardware, driver, mod or account configuration is compatible.

Remove recent variables in a controlled way#

If the issue began after adding a mod or launch option, record the original setting and use the game's documented method to test without it. Change one variable and attempt another launch.

Check official game requirements and supported driver guidance. Obtain updates from the manufacturer or official distribution route, not an unknown “driver fixer.”

If security software reports a file, investigate the report and the developer's instructions. Do not disable protection broadly to make a game run.

Separate installation problems from runtime problems#

Valve's update and installation troubleshooting page covers issues such as download cache and library-folder problems. Those are appropriate leads when installation or updating fails, not mandatory steps for every crash.

A game may also depend on a supported runtime or launcher. Use its official installer and documentation; do not download individual DLL files from arbitrary websites.

Escalate with useful evidence#

If the game still fails, collect the version, error, relevant game logs and a list of changes you tested. Redact personal details or tokens before posting diagnostics publicly.

The useful support message is “Only this game fails after update X; verification completed; no custom launch options; here is the error,” rather than “I tried everything.”

If your system is on an unsupported operating-system path, read the Windows 10 migration guide. Reinstallation cannot replace missing platform support.

Stop repeating a step once it has produced evidence. The objective is to narrow the cause while keeping your saves recoverable.
